Great singer, out of time…

Posted: May 17th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Music | 3 Comments »

2009-05-17I was very sad this evening to learn that Curt Petersen, of Curt & Roland fame, left this world yesterday. I have very fond memories of listening to his music when I was young. Quite a few times Curt & Roland would come to our local church and sing. There’s something about their music that rocks me till this day.

It is very strange, it was just one week ago that I ordered seven CDs from their website. I hadn’t listened to Curt & Roland for many, many years – and it’s only recently that some of their albums have been made available on CD. I got the albums a few days ago and while traveling to Gothenburg this weekend, Elin and I have been listening to the songs in the car.

(In picture, from left: Curt, Anders and Roland – ten years ago or close to that…)

Curt Petersen was one of the great singers of our time. Now he is out of time, and I for one will forever miss him. God Bless you Curt – and thank you for this amazing heritage.

The Nordströms go Bollywood!

Elin and I just came back from Gothenburg. We went to celebrate one year of marriage. It was either that or go to Turkey or Greece, but with so many immigrants in Sweden it doesn’t really matter, so we went to see the Turks and the Greeks on the swedish west coast. However, the turkish restaurant had no vacant table for us, and we didn’t see any greek diner so we ended up at a Thai restaurant that was run by chinese people. We also saw a Thomas Di Leva show and won 2 kgs or chocolate at Liseberg.

While at the Museum of World Culture, who currently have a Bollywood show on display, we made our own film. Crappy quality but the performances are breathtaking.

The Niro feat. Rattlehead

2009-05-12This summer my good friend Martin Prahl is getting married. These days he only writes music by himself I think and the stuff I have heard is very good I think, but a few years ago he had a project called The Niro and before I left for the US in 2005 they asked me to try out on vocals so I wrote a song about Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). The song was called “Pantone Matching System”. Eventually I think Martin wrote some lyrics of his own and recorded vocals for the song.

But today I thought I would share version with you. From their part this was just some random recording from the rehearsal room I think, with Martin playing the bass. The other two guys I never met but as you can hear they were pretty talented.

The Niro “Pantone Matching System” (demo)

While being on subject of the Music Police (I’m sure Martin himself would agree he is just that) I have to say that I was taken by a storm tonight. VH1 have a Top 50 Guitar Riff countdown, playing full videos, and so far they’ve played:

Whitesnake “Here I Go Again” (the original 1982 version)
Van Halen “Why Can’t This Be Love?”
The Cult “Rise” (has this ever been shown on tv?)
Soundgarden “Rusty Cage”
Iron Maiden “Can I Play With Madness”

It takes guts. VH1 obviously has what it takes to broadcast that which does not suck.

We are back!

Örebro Hockey is back in Allsvenskan with a 5-3 win against Huddinge tonight, while Tingsryd got their asses wooped by Asplöven. I’ve had a hard time sleeping this week becoz of the upcoming game, but man, this weekend is saved!

I’ve only missed two home games this season which I compensated by going to a few away games. Waiting for this moment, one team out of fifty-seven!! Yes. We did it. We are back!

Two weeks ago we travelled to Valbo outside of Gävle yesterday to scream and shout and add whatever we could. I brought my camera and it is only fitting that we remember that win today.

The Social Services

2009-03-31mainThe Social Services played in Stockholm this saturday, I covered the show for a paper which did not end up using one particular picture that I myself liked a lot so I though I might as well post it.

They’re a good indie pop band, recently played live on BBC, from Sweden and Scotland and they put out a praised album a few months ago called “It’s nothing personal, it’s national security”. It’s not really my cup of tea. At least not usually, it’s a bit to merry but I actually enjoy their album a bit. The lyrics are great fun.

Myself I have to go do some important work now.

It’s nothing personal, it’s…

The Analog Kid

2009-03-26mainHorribly tired. Confused. Irritated. Depressed. Wired. Unfocused. I have been feeling utter crap lately, and though I think it might be the winter dark and season I think it is so much more. By no means am I a computer wiz (more computer jizz actually) but I spend more than half my awake-time in front of one and I think that it has had my brain working overtime sorting information for a long long time in a galaxy far far away from normal brain activity.

Surely this must be some sort of techno stress. I can barely sit down and read a book without processing 117 different thoughts and ideas while doing so. Peace of mind? Yes please, give me a bomb to blow up this digital disgrace of a rat race. Ok, I’m blowing steam here, but I must do something about this. The first thing to go in some way is facebook. I don’t even use it much, but I spend all my days hating it and that takes energy too. Then I guess computer free days is something to strive for as well, tried having one two days ago but failed coz someone requested a favor. When I work for the municipality I work with a PC all day, you’re right, but that is barely a computer anyways.

If you have the strength yourselves, by all means, comment on your routines. My take is that all this access and info and contacts is just killing all the fun in the end. And as always, the canadian power trio Rush holds many a wise word on all matters:

The boy lies in the grass with one blade
Stuck between his teeth – A vague sensation quickens
In his young and restless heart – And a bright and nameless vision
Has him longing to depart

God’s horror!

2009-03-13mainThree weeks ago I interviewed film critic Dave Canfield in Chicago, IL. Today the newspaper Dagen published the article which was a little bit more progressive before they decided to shorten it a bit. Hence, Dave’s comments on beheading girlfriends with shovels (Evil Dead II) and other people with weed wackers (Friday the 13th) were left out. Instead they found another dude, from Sweden, who also lectures in film and he had some oppinions on the matter.

All in all it was a good twist I think, still due to that they had to leave out some great pictures so I decided to throw some of them out here.
